How Can severe Muscle Cramps Be Treated?

I have a neurologist who is trading a different condition however when I explained to him that often times I cannot walk because the muscles on the underside of my feet cramp up so hard that my toes get rigid and separate and go all different directions. I have had someone attempt to stretch my toes out but it feels like it is ripping the muscles. It is excruciatingly painful. My neurologist said I know what you have but he never told me. Any ideas?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
There are numerous reasons for toe cramping
- The person could have a deficiency of minerals (eg: calcium, phosphoros or magnesium). A blood test should be done to asses for these deficiencies and can be supplemented if necessary
- The person could be using certain medications (eg: statins) and thus a history on the use of current or chronic medication will be useful.
- Medical conditions such as diabetes contribute to peripheral neuropathy. The patient should be screened for diabetes and have an assessment of the foot done to assess for any sensation loss.
-Age is another problem to consider. As you age you lose muscle mass. The remaining muscles now have to work harder and this can easily lead to fatigue and cramps developing
